Barbara Strathdee: Twelve Months of Summer

22 January - 19 February 2012

Barbara Strathdee, Waikanae Stills - MBS 2, 2011, Private Collection

Twelve Months of Summer at Mahara Gallery consists of two series of paintings, entitled Waikanae Stills and Ted’s Jersey. The former consists of charcoal sketches of a bushclad Waikanae as seen from Seddon St, which have been enlarged and printed onto canvas with the addition of colourful geometric elements. The latter series was inspired by a kea, mountain landscapes and wildlife experienced during a tramping trip in Mt Aspiring National Park. The Waikanae Stills series was produced in 2010-11 and Ted’s Jersey in 1973.

Barbara Strathdee, born Barbara Smythe, Wellington 1941, worked as a graphic artist in Wellington and Auckland, before moving to London and then Trieste, Italy with her husband and daughter. Her first Italian solo exhibitions were held in Bari and Ferrara in 1971. Her career includes extensive solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally that spans 40 years, and she was included in the important After McCahon exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 1989.

The exhibition, Cloak of Protection, the Game features 24 illustrations by Otaki-based artist Morgan Rothwell. These illustrations were commissioned by Jil Hemming, also a local artist, for her card game, Cloak of Protection, nine years in the making.

Before waves of hungry mammals came ashore, these islands were ruled by a kingdom of birds. In order for their survival, with the help of the powers of the land, swap, draw, and play to see if you can weave a new feather Cloak of Protection in one of the four realms, forest, sea, settlement and extinct. This is a card game developed by Waikanae-based artist Jil Hemming, which has been illustrated by Otaki artist and musician Morgan Rothwell, with support from John Innes, Don Little, Stan Richards and Moana Bond.

The game, Cloak of Protection contains 81 cards and a 92 page booklet with interesting facts and trivia. Suitable for 2 to 4 players and ages 7 and up and is available for sale at the Gallery for $35. The Gallery will also be holding family game days from 11am - 2pm on the following days: Tuesday 24 Jan, Saturday 28 Jan, Tuesday 31 Jan and Saturday 4 February, all welcome, entry free.
